Seeing the dentist can be a scary experience, especially for children. Children especially need special attention because they are typically more nervous than adults. That's why it is so important to find a dentist who can effectively calm your child's nerves.Â
Fortunately, at Aurora Children's Dentistry, we have the tools and training to effectively manage your child's dental anxiety.
We offer three types of sedation. Each option will allow you to remain relaxed during your child's procedure.
Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide is a common sedation dentistry option for children. Children who are able to sit in the dentist's chair on their own are usually good candidates for it.
Nitrous oxide is a sweet-smelling gas that your dentist can use to sedate your child during an appointment. The gas is mixed with oxygen and administered through a small, comfortable mask over the nose. Nitrous oxide wears off as soon as the mask is removed.
Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral conscious sedation uses medication to help your child relax throughout their appointment. Your child will still feel awake, but they will probably not remember much about the appointment afterward. This sedation method is typically reserved for longer appointments where the child may need to be in the dental chair for an extended period of time.
General Anesthesia
General anesthesia involves putting children to sleep using IV (intravenous) sedation, so they sleep through the entire procedure. General anesthesia is very safe and most often used for procedures such as tooth extraction, filling, or dental surgery.
Some parents are concerned about sedating their children for dental procedures. However, sedation dentistry for children is completely safe, and it offers many benefits. There are children who experience heightened sensitivity during dental procedures. The noise of the tools, the smells, and the sensations in the mouth can all create anxiety for some children. This anxiety can translate into increased discomfort, and it is more difficult to perform necessary procedures. Sedation dentistry offers a method of pain control to help soothe and calm children.
